What Are Wheel Hubs?

What Is A Wheel Hub?

A wheel hub assembly is a component that bolts to your wheel to allow your wheel to turn freely while you steer. A wheel hub is sometimes referred to as a hub assembly, wheel hub bearing, or wheel hub. This assembly is mounted between the drive axle and the brake drums or discs and contains bearings to allow for a smooth rotation and provisions for your wheel studs to be inserted in or mounted to.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Failing Wheel Hub?

When your wheel hub starts to go out, you will most likely hear or feel it. However, it will only be noticeable when the car is in motion. A failing wheel hub will have the following symptoms:

  • Noises such as growling or humming coming from the wheels when driving at a moderate speed.

  • Metal on metal screeching or rubbing sound when driving at low speeds

  • Shakes or vibrations felt in the steering wheel when driving

  • ABS light illuminates if the signal is lost or the sensor is failing

If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should take your vehicle to a certified mechanic. Since these symptoms can be caused by other suspension issues, it is a good idea to have a mechanic narrow it down to your struts before you repair it.

What Causes A Wheel Hub To Fail?

The wheel hub assembly is a sealed component that contains a seal that protects the internal workings from contaminants. Over time, your wheel hub is exposed to water, dirt, and other road grime, causing the seal to break down. Once this seal breaks down, these contaminants can enter the hub assembly, causing the bearings and grease to wear out. If your tires are unbalanced, this can also cause your wheel hubs to fail as the unbalanced tires will cause extra vibrations, causing more wear and tear on your hub assembly.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace A Wheel Hub?

Replacing a wheel hub can cost anywhere between $265-$347 on average, according to RepairPal. Whether you plan on replacing your wheel bearing yourself, or want to have a professional make the repair, GSP Latin America can supply you with some of the highest quality wheel hubs in the industry.
